— 🌍 NEW: For the first time in recent history, the amount of countries in the process of 'autocratizing' is larger than the amount of countries that are 'democratizing'
According to the Swedish research institute 'V-Dem', founded by political scientist Professor Lindberg, approximately 45 countries are currently in the process of democratic backsliding, i.e. becoming more autocratic.
This is in stark contrast to the 'democratic boom' which took place starting in the 1990's. Even democratic countries like the United States and Hungary are at a high risk of democratic backsliding.
