Seventy — and counting — horses dropped dead on an Oklahoma breeding ranch that has for generations provided livestock to rodeos. The horses died after eating a feed that contained an additive given to cattle. Department of Agriculture inspectors have taken samples, but results will not be known for weeks.
They suspect the horse feed was contaminated with Monensin, a common additive in cattle feed. The drug is an ionophore, antibiotic-like compound.
Monensin is toxic to horses. Inspectors are looking into the feed company's labeling procedures. Some of the horses were mares whose foals will now be bottle-fed.
