New statistics show something that would have been unheard of in the 90s.
What would you think if I told you that Sweden is changing, it is happening fast.
In fact, Swedish people are now already a minority in Malmö which is the third largest city in the country.
If you had told someone in the 90s that this would be the case, then you might have been labelled a ”far-right conspiracy theorist”.
However, it is happening.
The borders are still wide open in Sweden it seems. Because since 2020, around 600.000 people have gotten residence permit in Sweden. That is over 5% of the population in just a few years.
Some on the left see this as a good thing, with more cultural diversity.
But others on the right think this is going too far.
Let us take a look at some statistics and see how Sweden has changed.
Let us being by looking at the three biggest cities in Sweden. Firstly, in the numbers below, when it is mentioned that a person has a foreign background, this includes people that have at least one foreign born parent.
New official statistics from SCB give us some interesting insight.
The number of people with a foreign background in Sweden.
Malmö: 58.8%
Gothenburg: 49.2%
Stockholm: 46.1%
Sweden: 35.7%
This means that for Sweden as a whole, only 64.3% of the population now are ethnically Swedish.
Back in 1999, the same statistics showed that 20.3% of the population had a foreign background.
This means that in just a few decades the demographics have changed significantly.
In 2025, the population of Sweden increased with 17,800 people, driven entirely by people with a foreign background. Because the number of people with a Swedish background actually decreased last year by 8,100 people.
So the number of people with a Swedish background decreased. Meanwhile the number of people with a foreign background increased.
Around 90.000 people were granted residence permit in Sweden in 2025. In fact, between 2020 to 2025 around 600.000 people were granted residence permit in Sweden. Consider that the population of Sweden is only around 10.7 million people.
This means that over 5% of the population in Sweden has gotten their residence permit in the last 5 years.
The borders are wide open.
But Swedish people seem to support this. A new poll found that a majority of people do not want to abolish permanent residence status for migrants.
The poll made by Novus found that 58% said NO, they do not want the government to revoke/convert permanent residence permits into temporary ones. Only 24% said they supported the idea.
However, in contrast, a YouGov poll made in 2025 found that 73% of people in Sweden believed that immigration the last ten years had been ”too high” in the country.
Sweden is changing, that is a fact.
Some people on the left have said that this is just a ”far-right” conspiracy theory. But the facts are the facts.
Less than 65% of the population in Sweden now are Swedish.
