🇸🇴🇺🇸- The Story of Nur Omar Mohamed and why Ilhan is being investigated because of him.

Nur Omar was a colonel in the Somali Army under Siad Barre, and fought in the Ogaden War.

(The Ogaden War was a conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia that lasted from June of 1977 to March of 1978, when Somalia invaded over the control Ogaden. The Ethiopians were backed by Cuba and the USSR, which eventually led to the strategic defeat of Somalia.)

During this war obviously, there were a ton of war crimes committed by the somalis. extrajudicial killings, rapes, mass displacement, etc.

Not long after this came the Isaaq Genocide under Siad Barre, who Nur Omar was still serving under.

The Isaaq Genocide lasted from 1987 and 1989, and led to the deaths of between 50,000-200,000 civilians.

The genocide was so serious, that Siad had not only managed to displace 400,000 people, but stood up a new military unit that was literally named “Dabar Goynta Isaaqa” or “The Isaaq Exterminators” ...
